I want to show love
I grew up in Nevada and knew I wanted a change, so I decided to come to SPU. I have loved going to school here because I love Seattle. Over the past couple years that I have been here, I have been able to narrow down who I am and who I want to be. In everything I do and everything I say, I want to show love and be accepting of everyone. My mom and Grandma have modeled this for me my entire life and have shown how rewarding it can be. I am double majoring in psychology and criminal justice. My goal is to become a social worker specializing in alternative sentencing. A criminal conviction does not necessarily mean jail time. Alternative sentencing seeks out other ways for someone to serve their time, which could include fines or community service.
I believe that there are a lot of people out there who deserve a second chance and not going to prison could give them that opportunity. Some people just need to be given the opportunity to start over in order to thrive, like when I decided to leave home to go to college. Not only is the legal aspect of this line of work interesting to me, but also the personal aspect. I would love the opportunity to spend time with marginalized people, hear their stories and show them that they still matter and are valuable no matter what society says about them. In a way, I would like to become a mentor and be involved both professionally and personally with the people I represent and work with. Everyone has something great to contribute to society and my goal is to help him or her understand and achieve that.
